Algorithmic Bias in Digital Systems Across Race and Skin Tone: Effects on User Experience

The rise of technology has opened up new opportunities and ways of seeing the world. While technology has brought significant contributions to humanity, there has also been an increase in algorithmic bias within digital tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Some of these contemporary challenges include new forms of discrimination and racism toward people of African descent with darker skin tone complexions.

This research investigates how the underrepresentation of Black and other racialized individuals in technology, specifically in digital tools and applications, contributes to digital inequities. Due to the lack of accurate representation, we investigated user experiences and how these inequities harm people of Black, Brown, and other people of color. The study examines technological fairness, digital equity, and the impact of AI bias through usability testing, structured observation, and data-driven analysis.

Accessible Immersive Authoring for Autistic Human-Robot Interaction Using AR-IoT Storytelling

This project explores how immersive and accessible authoring tools can support autistic users in planning, expressing, and understanding interactions with robots and Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled environments. Conventional robot programming interfaces often rely on abstract code, textual logic, and implicit social conventions that can pose accessibility barriers.

The project investigates whether visually grounded, spatial, and narrative-based interaction techniques can provide more accessible alternatives. Students design and prototype an Augmented Reality (AR)-based authoring environment that allows autistic users to create robot behaviors and IoT interactions through spatial storytelling, visual cues, and structured interaction sequences. Autistic participants are involved in co-design and evaluation to examine accessibility, communication, and strengths-based engagement.

The Real Women App

The Real Women App

Many women around the world experience abnormalities within their reproductive systems, and many existing health apps ask questions that can feel triggering or even harmful. This app was created to promote women's health in a more understanding and inclusive way, without automatically asking about pregnancy or menstrual cycles.

Users can opt in or out of reproductive-related features, making the app supportive of women with hysterectomies, MRKH syndrome, transgender women, and anyone whose health journey does not fit traditional assumptions. The app includes trackers for mood, steps, heart rate, facial hair, weight changes, a transgender medical transition checklist, GPS to locate specialists, educational resources, and nearby support groups.
